Academic book reviews constitute a significant form of scholarly communication, serving to introduce, interpret, evaluate and recommend newly published works to academic communities. Despite their importance, this genre has been less often studied in corpus-based research than research articles and other types of academic writing.
Language Patterns in Academic Book Reviews: A Corpus-Based Exploration of Lexical Bundles and Rhetorical Moves is a study of the use of lexical bundles (or recurring language patterns) in different rhetorical moves in academic book reviews published in the Q1-indexed journals in the areas of language and linguistics. Taking as its starting point research in the areas of corpus linguistics, genre analysis and formulaic language, the book shows how expert reviewers make use of conventional phraseological patterns to achieve specific communicative functions during the review process.
Based on a corpus of fifty academic book reviews published in leading international journals, the book investigates the structures and functions of lexical bundles and their relationship with rhetorical moves. The findings show that lexical bundles are not haphazard collocations of words but function as genre-sensitive rhetorical devices for reviewers to organize information, to make evaluations, to build disciplinary credibility, and to communicate effectively with academic audiences.
Apart from its theoretical contribution, the book has practical implications for English Language Teaching (ELT), particularly in the areas of academic writing, English for Academic Purposes (EAP), English for Research Publication Purposes (ERPP) and corpus-based pedagogy. It offers valuable insights for researchers, graduate students, teachers and academic writers who seek to understand how patterns of language shape successful scholarly communication.
